A Menu For Thanksgiving

No Black Friday Shopping for me—its Turkey season—a Turkey here we come!!!

Does your family have a menu ritual for Thanksgiving? My family has –or should I say I have always had one — one that harkens back to my childhood—from my days watching “Captain Kangaroo” and his gang-Bunny Rabbit, Dancing Bear and Mr GreenJeans singing “We gather together” with an added smidgen of my elementary school Thanksgiving menu that introduced me to cornbread stuffing and Chocolate Cream Pie!!

Captain Kangaroo and gang – Mr.GreenJeans, Bunny Rabbit and Dancing Bear

So this is my Thanksgiving Menu–please feel free to share your turkey day ritual with me—-The Turkey–about 20 pounds and it has to be a Butterball brand—what else!! It will be filled with sage, thyme, rosemary, a large orange and some sliced lemon. Sweet Italian Sausage will be spread under the skin. Butter will be hand spread all over and inside the turkey cavity and then lightly sprinkled with paprika—The Stuffing- I actually use Kraft StoveTop boxed stuffing and add extra celery, raisin and cranberries. It was my Mom–who used to make her own stuffing—She would sit on the couch while we watched the Macy’s Day Parade pulling apart Wonder Bread, and later adding celery, onions, raisins, spices and eggs to make one great tasting “out of the bird” stuffing! Mashed Potatoes: Fresh Red Bliss potatoes, boiled, mashed and then supplemented with butter, milk and a bit of Philly Creamcheese-yummy!! Candied Yams: Fresh yams/sweet potatoes boiled and than halved and drapped with brown sugar, pineapple chunks, raisins,  nutmeg and cinnamon. Veggies: Sweet Corn, Stringbeans, Asparagus, Acorn Squash and buttered Brussel Sprouts– Desserts: Alas , I cannot find a true Chocolate Cream Pie anymore – like I used to enjoy from my childhood—I used to get a great one at the Sage-Allen bakery in Hartford CT–they went out of business years ago–however, I will have a Lemon Meringue Pie, Pecan Pie and some assorted pastries courtesy of the Pasticceria Italia Bakery in Bloomfield, CT.  oh–I almost forgot—a big ritual was the morning Deviled Eggs that we ate with sliced celery and Ritz Crackers at Breakfast—the deviled eggs were made with the egg yolk blended with Hellman’s Mayo, some mustard, a tiny bit of horseradish and dusted with Paprika  Well that’s my Thanksgiving Menu–whats yours—- I am getting a bit hungry and Thanksgiving is still a bit away!!

On the Movie Front: In the last few weeks–I happened to see the new James Bond flick-Skyfall—it was OK—I really enjoyed it— Bond is in one action scene after another—running, running and more running – but where is the story—-THE STORY???…but it does all lead us up to a new direction in the Bond films one that will repeat some of the cherished history that was part of the Bond mystique–thank you Ian Flemming!!!  On the other hand—Lincoln was a wonderfully crafted story from Director Steven Spielberg about how President Lincoln was able to achieve the 13th amendment—-Sally Field has a “Field Day” playing Mary Lincoln—do I see an Oscar in her future–I say “Yea”!! In the next few weeks I am looking forward to seeing THE Hobbit” aren’t we all????
