You’re The Top-
It wasn’t until after Storm Sandy hit and a week later, a 5 inch snow storm, that I slowly started to transform TV5, the station that I manage in CT, into the “Spirit of the Season”- with holiday promos and scenes of winter-holiday music-my way of saying “Season’s Greetings” – it brings out the kid in me—and you?
At this point,I have eaten enough Turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes and seen all I
want of the Macy’s Day Parade–its time to Bring on the Canned Ham, popcorn balls, holiday cookies and See’s Boxed chocolate (more on that later). After Thanksgiving Malls? nah!! – I did not go to any malls either on Thanksgiving Day or even on “Black Friday”- but I did take two great hikes each day at the McLean Game Refuge in Granby CT- during my walks did not see any bears-hopefully all hibernating. Now-on Thursday, I had missed the televised National Dog Show-
(I was taking my hike ya see). But I was happily surprised that they rebroadcasted it on Friday evening and really overjoyed that my friend Jessica Plourde was showing “Una” the Australian Shepard. Jessica is an amazing handler of showdogs – (She won the National Dog Show in 2008). I have never mentioned this, but I am so equally proud of both her and her mom, Darleen, every time I see either of them handing their beautiful Whispering Pines Siberian Huskies in the showring it makes me smile!!! Tiss what they call beauty in motion!!!
Which leads me now to Cole Porter—You saw the Intro right–it had to lead to somewhere, right? So I break down and drop by the Westfarms Mall in Farmington, CT on Saturday with my brother Harvey. We stop by Macy’s – take a look at some clothes, nah–get a free sip of Tea at the TeaShop and head over to Harry & Davids for a comp sample of Moose Corn and Chocolate covered cherries. So there I am minding my own business while I garner another sample of cherries when this older wayward gentleman approaches me, “Dr. (I could not make out last name), how are you”? HE MEANS ME!! He asks me how I am and if I am now retired from the hospital -WHAT HOSPITAL? !!My brother is looking at me quizzically from afar as he nibbles on more Moose Corn samples. This gentleman continues asking about my years as a doctor? and then begins detailing his wives latest surgery. My brother’s sampling of the Harry & David store continues- he is a fast muncher–now after about 15 minutes, I finally pull myself away from the gent, wishing him a Happy Holiday while he gives me a hearty handshake. My brother asks–“Someone from the station? – nope never saw him in my life (Hand to God True Story)- by the way–my brother ate the last free chocolate covered cherry. On to Mrs See old Time Candies-(first floor of the mall)- they only have Mrs See’s here during Christmas time —these are THE BEST CHOCOLATES you have ever tasted!! They are not small insignificant pieces like found from other chocolatiers but LARGE, Chewey, Nutty, Delicious Confections—I purchase two boxes–not to worry I will be back for more!
So now I am on my way home—I turn on my Sirius Satellite Radio and there singing is Cole Porter himself belting out “You’re the Top”—a bit of audio grain- but each words so crisp and detailed -!
You’re the top!
You’re the Coliseum.
You’re the top!
You’re the Louver Museum.
You’re a melody from a symphony by Strauss
You’re a Bendel bonnet,
A Shakespeare’s sonnet,
You’re Mickey Mouse.
You’re the Nile,
You’re the Tower of Pisa,
You’re the smile on the Mona Lisa
I’m a worthless check, a total wreck, a flop,
But if, baby, I’m the bottom you’re the top!
………….yes you are the Top—-Things that are the TOP–be it someone that thinks you are his long lost Dr. and you let him go on and on and on–and than thank him for remembering you; enjoying a friends triumphs who you know enjoys what she does for a living and wish everyone could ( I personally tell folks I rather work with dogs too) ; and lastly savoring a wonderfully made piece of candy they are all the TOP!!! Cole Porter could not have gotten it better!! So? What is tops with you??? hey??
