Hot Head Burritos
What do you do when you say you’re really truly hungry – and the kids and family respond at each exhortation- how about Burgers? Unt uhhh! Pizza?? Feh!!! Krispy Chicken??? – that’s so 1970’s Dad!! So? What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO? In the case of the Dearborn Family of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, that was the dilemma they found themselves in as they traveled homeward bound from Enfield, knowing that their only alternative was kitchen leftovers. In a “aha” moment it was Pop Dearborn who had the answer to his “what to eat woes” – Windsor Locks, newest and most exciting food entry – Hot Head Burritos!
Hot Head Burritos, located at 209 Ella Grasso Turnpike, in Windsor Locks, has only been open for a short 6 weeks and is the singular Connecticut entry in this new Tex-Mex concept that is quickly becoming the “go too” place for freshly made tacos and burritos. Owned and operated by the brother team of Greg and Tom Yvon, both with over 20 years of franchise business background, they are currently in the planning stages of opening three more Hot Head Burritos restaurants here in Connecticut by the end of the year.
According to Greg Yvon when asked – “what makes “Hot Head Burritos” different than other dining choices? Greg quickly responds, “firstly the freshness of all our product, nothing is frozen, we are committed to serving freshly prepared food; secondly, customized menu- our customers can “tailor-make” their burritos, bowls, tacos, and quesadillas just the way they like with a variety of vegetables, proteins, and our wide variety of sauces- so many choices that you would be hard pressed to have it the same way twice; and lastly, our famous line of sauces- from “Mild to Wild”, we have 10 sauces, everything from a mild honey bbq sauce up to our 8 star “Hot Head” – Straight Habanero”.
During my most recent visit to Hot Head Burritos, I like most, was in that same impasse as the throng of folks in line ahead of me – so many choices! – I overheard numerous newcomers exclaim “please not to hot or spicy” while the friendly staff prepared their meals. One thing I truly enjoyed while queue in line was how the food was being prepared, each choice be it a burrito, a quesadilla, or taco looked out of this world yummy. In fact, it was so easy to strike up a conversation with a line-mate with the same basic question-“What are you having?- that looks delish”!
I freely admit I have “big eyes” and tried a hearty sampling from the menu making sure I selected one of each of the proteins: chicken, steak, pork, taco meat, and slo-cooked spicy barbacoa. Vegetarian options are also available. Toppings and salsa run the gamut from rice, brown rice, black beans, banana peppers, onions, sour cream, various cheeses, pico, corn and freshly made guacamole and much more. Both my Burritos and quesadillas were massive entries- brimming to bust with steak and chicken – one can actually feel the weight of these delectable edibles as you hold them up. By the way – my sauce of choice is the house-made “Hot Head Sauce” the perfect amount of heat. I additionally sample a Hot Head bowl with the added pineapple topping and the tacos- both the hard and soft, served with a wonderful mouth pleasing side of sour cream and freshly made guacamole- yes- I am savoring the flavor! Yum!
Hot Head Burritos is truly a new hidden gem – especially when you want something spicy, fulfilling and dare I say it- healthy! Yes you can pour the heat on or keep it mild, but the taste my friend is amazing, with friendly staff, and super service that will keep you coming back again and again- I am proud to call my self a “Hot Head”!! By the way, as mentioned, Hot Head Burritos is located in Windsor Locks, just a few minutes from Bradley International Airport, may I strongly recommend on your next adventure, stop by Hot Head Burritos first, have them prepare a freshly made taco salad, bowl and even a kids meal to go and enjoy it on the plane later- you will be so glad you did!!
